Leave the pieces to us.

Cold mornings in Campden are hard on tired brass, and a key that has been bending for years finally lets go inside the lock. We remove the snapped piece without harming the cylinder, look at why it failed, and cut a fresh key from the code or the remaining half before we leave. Calls from Pelham Union, Tintern and Silverdale are covered too.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 41 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 41% of homes in Lincoln were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In neighbourhoods with a mix of older and newer homes, the finishes on the doors vary widely: aged brass, satin nickel, matte black. A locksmith serving such an area keeps a range of finishes so replacement hardware suits each house.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 70% of homes in Lincoln (2021 Census). In areas of single houses, the door nobody watches is the side or back entry. It often has the weakest lock on the property. Fitting a proper deadbolt and a reinforced strike there is a modest job that closes the obvious gap.

Businesses use this section for stockrooms, cash offices, server closets and pharmacies: doors that must hold whatever happens to the power, with keys numbered and issued against a signature. Homeowners use it for the doors they lock every night.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

Your shop has had four employees leave in two years and each one had a key. Rekeying every time is getting old, and the hardware store will cut a copy for anyone who walks in with the original.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Every morning the front door key needs the same little dance: push in, lift, wiggle, turn. It has been getting worse for a year, and this week it took three tries in the cold before the deadbolt finally gave.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

You moved in three weeks ago. The previous owner left a handful of keys, none labelled, and the bolt on the side door rattles in its housing.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The shop's aluminum door has a bent meeting stile and the hookbolt is jammed half out. The alarm did its job and the display is untouched, but the entrance will not close properly and opening time is hours away.

Short answers to common questions

My key turns all the way but the door stays locked. What has failed?

Usually the link between the cylinder and the bolt. On a storefront lock the cam behind the mortise cylinder can wear or slip out of position; on a lever or mortise lockset the tailpiece or a spring in the deadlatch gives up. Your key is fine and so are the pins, so once the door is opened the fix is a new cam, tailpiece or latch, and your existing keys carry on working.

Does the glue trick work?

It is a well-known idea and a poor one. A drop of adhesive on the other half rarely bonds to a piece of brass sitting in a tight keyway, and what it does bond to is the cylinder, the pins and the face of the lock. That film then has to be dissolved before proper extractors can slide in. Keep the halves apart and dry.

What happens to the old lock?

It is yours. Some people keep a sound old cylinder as a spare or move a decent deadbolt to a shed or garage door, and the locksmith can rekey it to the house key for that purpose. Worn or damaged hardware is taken away for recycling if you prefer. Either way, the old keys should be gathered up and discarded so nobody confuses them with the new set.

Can a person's access change automatically by time of day or day of the week?

Yes. Access levels can be set to change automatically by time of day or day of the week, so a credential that opens a door during a shift can be denied outside it without anyone having to remember to switch it off manually. This is set up once in the schedule and then runs on its own from that point forward.
